My Remarks on the Election
by Greg ~ November 6, 2008
First, congratulations to Gov. Hoeven, Stacy Dahl, and Adam Hamm for their reelection. I’m sure they will continue to serve us with the excellence that they have demonstrated in the past.
Of course…we didn’t win them all. I think there are a number of reasons as to why events unfolded as they did on Election Day, but I think the major reasons behind the results can be summed down to two: “Republican” becoming a “dirty word,” and a huge turnout of young voters at the polls.
Because of the activities of our current president, and of high-profile members of his cabinet and of Congress, people have become disillusioned with the Republican Party, placing the blame for everything these few people have done on conservatives like me. Many of these people are of my generation, late teen/early 20-somethings whose major experience with Republicans has been solely the Bush Administration. This new generation drank Obama’s Kool-Aid like a frat boy drinking booze on an initiation night, and showed up in droves to vote against what Obama told them was a genetic clone of President Bush.
I’m not placing all of the blame on the left, though. The Republican party has indeed lost its way, and delivered a candidate for this election that did not speak for the majority of conservatives. Heck, even a UND College Republican Vice President (who shall remain nameless) put “F**k John McCain” in his Facebook status, as he had become a Bob Barr supporter.
Instead of jumping ship, we need to reform the Republican party, and make it the Grand Old Party it once was. After Tuesday, we’ve been left to lick our wounds, but if the new president will drive us into a Socialist abyss, people will be clamoring for “Change” from his “Change” in four years. We’ll just wait and see.
